He was just 17 when he enlisted in the Marines. “School wasn’t the place for me. My home life was chaotic. I thought the military could provide some stability, and it did. You got with the program quickly,” he remarked.

Dan Newberry

Dan Newberry, Manager of Goodwill’s E-cycle Operations, joined the Army right after high school, expecting to complete a lifelong military career. That plan ended abruptly in 2012. Honorably discharged due to a medical-related disability, Dan soon found himself adrift.

"I went from having a sense of responsibility, pride and direction in life, to nothing. It was incredibly difficult," he recalled.

Terra worked in the Zoological Society for her first rotation. She really came out of her shell during this internship. Terra is usually shy and soft spoken, but by the end of her rotation, she was able to contribute to her coworkers’ discussions and able to initiate conversations with people.

Charlie

Charlie S. was recently hired at a local Mobil One gas station. Charlie was able to obtain this job with help from Goodwill’s Supported Employment Program and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. The Supported Employment Program is all about job developers helping individuals find employment in the community. Once placed, a job coach continues to provide training and support to ensure success and build independence.

Lunch with King

King successfully completed his first rotation in December as a Project SEARCH intern at the Milwaukee County Zoo. He worked in the Education department. He did most of the prep work for the classes that included die casting, animal shapes, taking inventory of classroom supplies, tracing animals, and cutting and gluing.
