What is Individual Placement and Support (IPS)?

Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is an international evidence-based program that helps people with mental illness and/or substance use disorders find and keep jobs. IPS can also assist with educational goals that will lead to employment.

Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin & Metro Chicago operates IPS Services throughout Milwaukee County.

Principles of IPS

  • Every person who wants to work is eligible for IPS (zero exclusion).
  • Competitive jobs are the goal.
  • IPS services are integrated with mental health treatment.
  • Personalized benefit planning is provided.
  • The job search starts soon after a person expresses interest in working.
  • Employment specialists build relationships with employers based upon their clients’ work preferences.
  • Individual job supports are time unlimited.
  • Client preferences are honored.
