Basil

In celebration of Native American Heritage Day, we are featuring our Vice President General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, Basil Buchko, who is a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Basil is a Native American through his mother’s ancestry. He believes that his heritage has shaped him into the leader he is today.

According to Basil, “the Anishinabeeg are guided by the Seven Grandfathers: Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery, Truth, Humility, and Honesty. We further believe that when we make decisions, we should look to the Seventh Generation, asking how will my choice today affect the Seventh Generation from now? The combination of the Seven Grandfathers and Seventh Generation requires a well-balanced leader, with a view towards others over self and the future. That is the person I work to be every day in honor of my ancestors and as an example to others."
