Staying Active at Community Opportunities Club South

Participating in healthy activities has numerous health benefits from better sleep, to better moods and increased energy levels. Our participants at Community Opportunities Club(COC) South have the chance to take part in a variety of healthy activities every day!

Recreation Assistants Linda, Vicky and Laura strive to get everyone moving and engaged in healthy activities. There is something for everyone in which to take part! Some people prefer quiet activities like relaxation and mediation or learning about making healthy choices and reducing sugar intake. Others like to be on the move, walking and playing sports.

COC South offers many ways to stay active and engaged in health and wellness activities. Participants can build relationships and increase social skills while maintaining balance and continuing to move!Linda ran a walking club last summer. Walking Club is a favorite because it can be done anywhere! Participants took short walks weekly and tracked their miles. The groups would walk in our parking lot, around the neighborhood and at parks. When it rained or if it was too hot they walked indoors at the center or at the Milwaukee Sports Complex. The top walkers had a special lunch outing at Ferch’s Malt Shoppe on the lake at Grant Park. It was a hit and we plan on making it an annual event!

Vicky gets participants moving by playing games like balloon volleyball, ring toss and floor basketball. A favorite weekly activity is Sit n’ Be Fit. Participants gather around and sit at an arm’s length away from each other and move in all different ways. Everyone gets a chance to think of a movement like, “climb the ladder” or “touch your toes.” Many times, the movements become silly and laughing is said to be a great medicine!

Everyone wants to join Laura when she has her cooking activities. Making mini muffins and cookies is a great way to learn portion control. It is not always about denying yourself a treat, but learning about moderation that can make a big difference when it comes to healthy habits.
