Spooky, Scary Skele-Fun: Celebrating Goodwill's Spooky Hunt

Posted by Nichole Uecker on Nov 13, 2015 10:12:54 AM

Participants competed in games like Pin the Nose on the Witch, Pumpkin Toss and Swamp Sludge ScavengeOn a not-so-dark and stormy morning, vampires, goblins and ghouls searched through slimy sludge for creepy crawlies, pinned noses on the resident witch, and built skeletons out of a bag of bones. They were, of course, taking part in Goodwill’s annual Spooky Hunt at our James O. Wright Center for Work and Training (JOW) to celebrate Halloween.

The Spooky Hunt has been so popular that it has become an annual event; this year marked our third year of Halloween fun and was bigger and better than ever before!

Participants and staff chose great Halloween costumes for the Spooky HuntParticipants and staff from the Day Services and Life Skills Development programs competed in Halloween-themed activities and followed clues to make their way to games like “Pin the Nose on the Witch,” “Pumpkin Toss,” and “Swamp Sludge Scavenge.”

The scavenger hunt challenged participants to utilize problem solving skills and each stop incorporated fine and gross motor skills, moderate exercise, and sensory enhancement. The participants and staff enjoyed the spirit of comradery that the event created as the teams competed to finish the tasks.

The team that solved all of the puzzles and completed all of the tasks in the shortest amount of time took home spook-tastic trophies made by our Men’s Club. (The club was founded in 2013 as a way to provide increased engagement and programming enrichment). In addition participants were able to express their creativity as they chose their Halloween costumes and marched in the parade after event.

The entire Day Services and Life Skills Development team was integral to making this day a success—direct care staff, case managers, and supervisors decorated the large Day Services area, painted faces, and aided participants as they made their way through a number of fun and challenging games.
