Mileage Club Helps with Health, Personal Goals and Social Connections

One way our Goodwill participants can reach these goals is through the Mileage Club, which is one of our most popular programs. We find that walking is a great way for them to exercise and socialize with those around them.Having a goal is the first step toward growing and improving as a person. At the Goodwill Center for Work and Training – Southwest Campus (GSC) Day Services program, many of our Clubhouse participants have personal objectives to better their health and fitness on a weekly basis.

One way our participants can reach these goals is through the Mileage Club, which is one of our most popular programs. We find that walking is a great way for them to exercise and socialize with those around them.

During a typical Mileage Club session our participants will walk one to two full miles. The club’s activity locations vary from indoor tracks within the halls of GSC and Southridge Mall, to outdoor courses on GSC’s walking paths and at local parks. Participants also look forward to the 5K walks that we have hosted both here and at Community Opportunities Club North.

The Mileage Club offers several perks for its members. They have the option to sport a Mileage Club necklace, on which they can keep track of their progress by adding a bead for every mile they complete. We also have a Mileage Club board where we display the names of our weekly leaders and those members who have walked the most total miles.

To motivate members even more, our group can “walk to” selected destinations. Once the group has collectively traveled the total number of miles it takes to get from GSC to the chosen location, we celebrate with a themed party.

Our first destination was to the doorstep of Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers, where we trekked 125 miles. For our second destination, our group chose to raise the stakes and they are currently taking on the 1,225-mile journey to Walt Disney World in Florida.

When asked why he enjoys Mileage Club, frequent member Eric L. said, “I like the exercise and going to Disney World!” Eric is just one of the many Clubhouse participants taking advantage of the benefits the Mileage Club offers.
