Goodwill's Community Opportunities Club, a Fun Place To Be!

Posted by Jan Kruk on Jul 17, 2015 8:46:42 AM

Most people in our community know that Goodwill provides training, employment and supportive services for people with disabilities or disadvantages. But, did you know that we operate three community-based drop-in centers, called Community Opportunities Club or COC as we like to call it?

Goodwill's Community Opportunities Club enjoys rock band at St. Roman's festivalOur participants have enjoyed COC for more than 15 years! The Club supports adults who have been impacted by a physical disability or brain injury to regain the confidence and independence needed to lead more productive and active lives. Members are able to choose a variety of opportunities such as health and wellness activities, arts and enrichment classes, community integration and volunteer opportunities.

I would like to tell you about one of our Club members, Bobby. He is an enthusiastic supporter of St. Roman’s Church Festival in Milwaukee. Not only does he volunteer every year, he knows where the rides are stored locally and likes to watch the festival crew assemble the rides prior to opening day. Because he enjoys the festival so much he asked his friends to meet him there. After hearing this, Jessica, a Goodwill Case Manager, decided this would be a perfect opportunity to offer a Saturday outing for Club members.

Several COC members traveled together in our Goodwill van to the festival grounds and enjoyed games, rides, homemade bakery, various foods, and most importantly, this 1980s tribute Rock ‘n Roll hair band! Even though it was a busy day, Bobby took a break from his ground maintenance volunteer position to enjoy a dance with his friends. It truly was a fun day for all!
