Celebrating National Holidays Provides Learning Opportunities

Posted by Goodwill Staff on Jun 11, 2020 4:44:05 PM

National HolidaysChristmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day – these are just some of the well-known holidays that people celebrate. But what about Pancake Day, Syrup Day or Salami Sandwich Day? We think they deserve their time in the spotlight, too. And that’s just what this Goodwill group is giving them.

Goodwill's Community Opportunities Club in Greenfield is trying to celebrate as many holidays as they can this year. Some of these days are just for fun, like National Squirrel Painting Day, National Hat Day, National Kazoo Day and National Kite Flying Day (which happens in February, so it’s usually too cold in Wisconsin to celebrate).

While celebrating these holidays, the group is also learning! They learn new skills such as cooking, decorating, painting and planning that go with the holidays as well as the history behind them.

For example, on National Pancake Day, the group learned how to make pancakes, the origin of pancakes, where syrup comes from and the steps taken to get it to our tables. On National Women Physicians’ Day, the group learned about the first woman physician and the significance to us now, almost 200 years later (By the way, it was Elizabeth Blackwell in the 1820s.)

Everyone deserves their day, and we’re proud of this group for highlighting so many important ones throughout the year.
