Goodwill’s Community Opportunities Club North started their very own Mileage ClubGoodwill’s Community Opportunities Club North started their very own Mileage Club with the help of Recreation Assistant Joey James. Participants walk laps daily on the outdoor, paved, quarter-mile track. With hard work and a competitive spirit, they built up their stamina to participate (and host) in the program’s first ever Flower Power 5K fun run/walk held on May 25.

Twenty participants joined in on the day’s excitement and eight were able to complete the entire 3.1 miles! Everyone was able to cross their own “finish line” and break through the tape. They were awarded special flower charms and certificates of acknowledgement for their hard work. Many plan to frame their certificates so they can hang them up at home.

Our participants are seeing a positive change in their strength and endurance. And the group has collectively lost over 20 pounds in the past two months! Most notably, club member Stephanie S. has gone from wearing oxygen every day in 2016, to no longer needing supplemental oxygen, to walking a 5K nonstop in under 90 minutes! Of the Mileage Club, Stephanie says, “I can’t believe I did it! I’m so proud of myself. With help from everyone here, I did it!”
Stephanie and the club’s other participants are working hard to improve their times for the next big event – the Splish Splash Dash held in August. Be sure to check back with us again next month to hear about our next big event!
