Listening to Our Workforce

Over 6,000 amazing individuals work for our organization to deliver our mission every day. Competition for extraordinary talent is real and the number one priority for anybody in a leadership position is to make sure they have the right people, in the right position, at the right time. Having an engaged workforce is critical to our success and that starts with listening to their needs and desires. In the 2018 Workplace Learning Report (from LinkedIn Learning), studies show that 94% of employees would stay at a company longer if the company invested in their career development.  Studies from Ceridian’s 2017 Pulse of Talent also show that 91% of high performers felt that working for an employer that offered learning and development opportunities was very important to them.

Career Compass put employees in charge of their careers with visibility and options to what is possible. All this is enabled with interactive web technology that employees can use with any device in any location. Two years ago, we launched our first all employee engagement survey to understand the feelings and needs of our employees. The message back was loud and clear, and they said that visibility into growth and advancement opportunities was top of mind. We took that call to action and last year developed and launched Career Compass; our organizational Career model. It provides our employees a map of all job roles within the organization. It helps employees navigate and manage their own careers by showing them where they are at present along with opportunities for lateral or upward mobility. We linked this role mapping with development opportunities that will help them, along with their manager, prepare and develop their skills for that next role. In short, Career Compass put employees in charge of their careers with visibility and options to what is possible. All this is enabled with interactive web technology that employees can use with any device in any location.

I can’t wait to see how our employees embrace Career Compass and map their career journey with Goodwill. We wouldn’t be at this point, however, if we hadn’t taken the time to listen to our employees through the engagement survey. Listening is the key to success. We are about to launch our next all employee engagement survey and I am excited to see the results and what is top of mind with our teams today. These surveys provide great input into what we need to focus on to ensure that we have an engaged team delivering our mission. So, ask yourself, how are you listening to your team and do you know what is top of mind for them?
