Goodwill Day Services Program’s Annual Halloween Costume Contest Goes Virtual

During a year when so many have had to pivot and adjust, the Goodwill Day Services program is no different. Goodwill Day Services programs offer fun, 20201030_103125engaging activities for individuals with disabilities in Milwaukee County. Through the programs, participants are looking to socialize with their peers, build natural supports in the community, enhance their independent living skills and focus on volunteer opportunities.

For many years it was tradition for everyone to come together in one place to celebrate holidays like Halloween. Typically, the program would host a costume contest for its participants with many employees in attendance. This year, the contest was held virtually with participants at each of their sites as well as at home joining in the fun.

“As we continue to adapt during the pandemic, our team is utilizing technology to keep our program participants safe while providing them the support and engagement they need,” said Brandon Peters, supervisor day services.

Over 40 program participants got creative when it came to putting their costumes together this year. They competed for prizes in categories including scariest, funniest and most original. Winners dressed up as Cleopatra, a vampire, a truck, IT, Elvis, a grill and more.

Throughout the past six months, Goodwill Day Services has developed a menu of virtual classes available to participants, allowing them to continue to meet with friends, explore new hobbies and interests, and build upon independent living skills from the comfort and safety of their homes. With help from Goodwill case managers, participants can select virtual program offerings such as cooking, exercise, health and wellness, arts and crafts, and adult education and receive instruction in small online groups from trusted Goodwill staff members.
