A group from the Goodwill Life Skills Development Program attended a presentation offered by Life Navigators and Milwaukee County Transit. On May 17 a group from the Life Skills Development Program at the Goodwill Center for Work and Training – Southwest Campus attended a presentation offered by Life Navigators and Milwaukee County Transit to learn more about bus safety, route and fare information. We also learned about special services, such as travel training that is offered to help people become familiar and comfortable with riding the city bus.

Participants listened to an informative presentation and had their questions answered by Milwaukee County Transit employees. We discussed who is eligible to ride Transit Plus and receive discount fares. Also, knowing to have the exact change, paying the correct fare, and showing proper identification when required will help us have a good start to our bus ride.

Our participants learned about bus safety, route and fare informationAfter the presentation, participants were able to take a ride on a training bus, were given safety tips and shown special features of the bus.

We learned the following helpful tips:

  • The bus driver is our “best friend” and will be there to help us if we felt uncomfortable or had a question.
  • Always stay behind the yellow line.
  • Look for seats that are marked with the accessibility symbol which are closer to the front and designated for senior citizens and people with disabilities.
  • On the newest buses in the fleet, a single row of seating behind the driver can accommodate multiple passengers with carts, strollers and walkers.
  • The buses run almost 24 hours a day. You can use an app on your smart phone to check the location of your bus.
  • They even offer private lessons to people to help them plan their route and increase comfort.

Now that we know more about the city bus, where should we go?
