Teaching people to fish

Posted by Amanda Beller on Aug 27, 2019 11:36:37 AM

There is a saying: “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day.” “Teach a man to fish and he eats forever.” At Goodwill, we are all about “teaching people to fish” so they can increase their independence and thrive in the communities we serve. With that in mind, one Goodwill employee performed an Act of Goodwill and taught some participants the fun of fishing!

Justin Beller (Lead Talent Acquisition Consultant, Human Resources) held two sessions at the Community Opportunities Club South, where participants learned the finer points of fishing, including baiting the hook, which featured a tasty worm for all to eat (gummy worms, of course)!

Everyone was able to practice casting and reeling in the fish, as Justin tied plastic wheels to the fishing line. Justin also discussed important safety practices with our participants, such as no swinging of poles and local fishing regulations. If they caught a fish, participants also learned how to grab it and how to prevent getting poked by the fins and scales.

In the weeks that followed, several fishing trips were scheduled at nearby Scout Lake and individuals practiced what they learned. It wasn’t just the participants that learned the ropes, our staff did too. Some members conquered their fear of fishing. Recreation Assistant Vicky was not too keen on baiting the hooks with real worms, but was determined to face her fear. She learned how to tie on a new hook in case her line became snagged or broken, and she helped hook all the worms at our various outings. Don’t worry only the fish ate those worms!

Goodwill Participants learn to take the bus

Posted by Guest on Jul 24, 2019 9:00:00 AM

Goodwill’s mission is to provide training, employment and supportive services for people with disabilities or disadvantages who seek greater independence. An important step to that independence is transportation, whether it aids in getting to a job or helps in having a more fulfilling personal life.

Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) realizes how valuable reliable, affordable and accessible transportation is to individuals. That’s why they have a program called Freedom on Wheels. Through this program, MCTS staff go out into the community, at no charge, to teach individuals about bus transportation.

Freedom on Wheels is a two-part presentation:

Spending a day with mission makes work more meaningful

Posted by Jennifer Houston on Jul 19, 2019 10:26:20 AM

This year, a new partnership between Day Services and Retail has Goodwill Store & Donation Center leaders “Inspired by People.” Several store leaders had the opportunity to spend a day working with our Clubhouse and Day Services participants at the Goodwill Center for Work and Training – Southwest Campus. By assisting with art projects, cooking classes, and even being a bowling coach for the day, store managers have had chance to see, first hand, the ways in which Retail revenue helps drive Goodwill’s mission of providing supportive services to people with disabilities or disadvantages who seek greater independence.

Day Services' Annual Camp Goodwill Event was Dino-Mite!

Posted by Nichole Uecker on Jun 27, 2019 4:04:23 PM

Held annually, Camp Goodwill is an opportunity for participants and staff from all our program locations to gather and enjoy the great outdoors, fun and games, and of course, a cookout! The event is highly anticipated throughout the year and this year’s camp – with a dinosaur theme – was a roaring success!

On Wednesday, June 5 our Community Opportunities Club North (COC North) located at Underwood Parkway in Wauwatosa was transformed into a Jurassic Park for our 7th Day Services Camp Goodwill. Our theme for our 2019 event was “I Dig Camp Goodwill” and our activities, crafts, and décor highlighted our favorite prehistoric pals – dinosaurs!

Sporting matching dino-green camp t-shirts, participants enjoyed a Dinosaur Dig for fossils in our sand pit, geocached for dinosaur eggs in COC North’s lush woods, created their own fossils from clay, had their pictures taken with a “real” dinosaur, and won fantastic prizes in Thunder Lizard Bingo. Each of these stations was supervised by volunteers from throughout the Goodwill organization who were eager to take part in the fun. The group of participants, staff and volunteers worked up a brontosaurus-sized appetite around noon and enjoyed grilled hot dogs, chips, fruit, beans and dessert.

The 2019 Camp Goodwill tricera-topped all our expectations! We are looking forward to enjoying more sun, fun, and food with friends at next year’s event.
